Overview

Neonatologists have a role in defining the quality metrics that are used to assess how well we are providing high-value neonatal care and best outcomes. Measures for quality assessment are used externally to evaluate the performance of health care providers or institutions; they can be used for regulation or accreditation, for informing payment or reimbursement or for public reporting or surveillance. Measures for quality assessment should be rigorous and evidence-based; yet, many measures used for quality assessment have not been thoroughly evaluated. This presentation will provide an update on an ongoing effort by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Quality Measures Task Force to identify and evaluate neonatal quality measures.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Describe the differences between measures for quality improvement and measures for quality assessment.
  2. Discuss how to evaluate quality measures based on their importance, scientific acceptability, feasibility and usability
  3. Summarize the current efforts of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Neonatal Perinatal Medicine Quality Measures Task Force to identify neonatal quality measures that are reliable, valid, and important.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
