Overview

Cumulative evidence demonstrates probiotics given to preterm infants reduces necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), sepsis and mortality. This presentation will address the gap between the evidence regarding probiotic use and the current routine use of probiotics in NICUs to prevent NEC, sepsis and death.


ACCME Objectives
  1. Identify the risk factors for necrotizing enterocolitis and the risks of dysbiosis in preterm infants.
  2. Interpret the evidence from studies of probiotics use in preterm infants.
  3. Discuss similarities and differences of various probiotic strains and products, including data on effect as well as quality considerations.
  4. Identify key strategies for the implementation of probiotic use in the NICU.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
