Overview
Studies of outcomes for periviable infants often fail to differentiate overall survival from survival among babies who received intensive care. This presentation will encompass a detailed analysis of some of the methodological quirks of many published outcome studies for premature babies, as well as the ethical considerations for the periviable birth.

ACCME Objectives
  1. Examine reported outcome data for extremely premature babies.
  2. Illustrate the difference between the variables "survival without severe disabilities" and "percentage of severe disabilities among survivors."
  3. Summarize the ethical dilemmas associated with infants born at the limits of viability.
